Family Law Practice Group
Our Family Law team offers a practical, responsive, and dedicated approach to the resolution of divorce proceedings, custody disputes, paternity actions, modification proceedings, removal cases, and same-sex marriage and partnership issues. Our sophisticated practice is characterized by complex litigation involving valuation of assets, tax analysis and jurisdictional issues. We negotiate and draft prenuptial agreements to protect closely held businesses, family trusts, inheritances, and other substantial assets in the event of divorce or death of a spouse.
Our Family Law attorneys are creative in their approach to settlement and provide our clients the legal framework to resolve their disputes through negotiation or mediation. We guide clients through the mediation process to help them amicably resolve their disputes. When such efforts fail and litigation cannot be avoided, our experience and ability to handle the most sophisticated litigation matters enables us to successfully protect our clients’ rights, assets, and income before the Probate Court. Acknowledged as leaders in the family law field, we have worked extensively with the Massachusetts Legislature, the Courts, and the Massachusetts Department of Revenue to shape legislation, train other lawyers and enhance the practice of family law in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We are often called upon to teach seminars in the areas of child custody, disputes concerning business valuation, taxation, jurisdiction, and real estate, and to serve as Special Masters in complex business disputes and discovery matters.

Specific examples of our services are the following:
• obtained a very favorable settlement of divorce proceedings for a client whose estate was valued at over $200,000,000 and involved complex issues concerning the disposition of stock options;
• drafted and negotiated a prenuptial agreement for an internationally recognized heir to a large fortune;
• successfully briefed and argued cutting edge issues involving alimony, child support and jurisdiction before the Appeals Court;
• successfully argued motions in court, leading to an agreement in a removal case pursuant to which a parent was allowed to return to the family home in Ireland with the children while the other parent obtained frequent contact;
• advised our client as to intricate issues concerning substantial trust assets;
• prevailed in a dispute involving complex jurisdictional issues so that our client could proceed with a divorce action in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts;
• served as a Special Master for the valuation and disposition of business assets in Europe; and
• represented a client through the successful mediation of divorce proceedings involving complicated pensions and retirement plan issues.
