Within the firm's general practice, Rob Barber focuses mainly upon the business issues of start-up, small and medium-size companies and commercial litigation, serving many of these companies in the role of outside general counsel. A number of Rob’s clients initially sought his help as litigation counsel, and these companies, and their principals, have continued with Looney & Grossman for all, or a variety of, non-litigation matters, including real estate, intellectual property and estate planning matters. Rob has also assisted in the formation and early development of a variety of ventures, and continues to represent these companies in business disputes, and internal and external transactions.

Rob was born in Columbus, Georgia in 1950 and raised in Charleston, South Carolina. He graduated from Phillips Academy in 1968 and Harvard College in 1972. After a year away from academia, Rob entered Boston University School of Law, from which he graduated in 1977, in the same year obtaining a Masters in City and Regional Planning from Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Rob worked in New York from 1977-1981, as an assistant district attorney for New York County. He returned to Boston, joining Looney & Grossman as an associate in 1981. Rob has been a partner of the firm since 1985, was Managing Partner from 2000–2002, and has served on the Management Committee. He is admitted to practice in state and federal courts in Massachusetts and New York, and the United States Supreme Court. Rob is a member of the Boston Bar, the New York Bar and the American Bar Associations. In 2006, he was named a Massachusetts Super Lawyer.

Rob is Treasurer of the Social Law Library, having served on the Library’s Board of Trustees since 1998, and also is active in his community, having coached youth baseball and soccer. He has been and is involved in local, state and national political campaigns, and has served as a Democratic ward committeeman in his hometown of Cambridge. He volunteers for fundraising and other alumni activities at Harvard College and Phillips Academy, presently serving on the Board of Trustees of Phillips Brooks House Association, the undergraduate social service and social action organization at Harvard College, and is director of the Abbot Academy Association, a charitable organization to promote and fund projects in the Phillips Academy community.

Rob is AV-rated® by the Martindale-Hubbell Legal Directory, its highest rating for legal ability and professional ethics.
